By 1991 The Cosby Indicate was not exactly the commercial powerhouse it had been in the mid to unhurried 80’s but remained the hottest game in town. As with many a last season this series ties up many loose ends. There are five main state points the generally extend throughout the seasons, sort of as mini record arcs: Cousin Pam trying to apply to collage and coping with Charmaine going away to collage,Cliff trying to gain a private room for Clair now that most of the kids are away,Theo preparing for his upcoming graduation, somewhat of a teenage “appreciate traigle” between Rudy,Kenny and their respective loves interests and modern collage student Vanessa’s truly bizzare relationship with the older but self sufficiant Dabnis, whom Cliff takes a knowing to because of his abilities as a tinker. There are some laughable moments this season but for the most section the episodes concentrate on developing and closing the narrative arcs and thus the characters themselves. Another indispensable allotment of this season is that this is the very first season of The Cosby Demonstrate where Lisa Bonet doesn’t create even a single physical appearance in the show;Dennise is only refered to casually in grasp episodes and is only spoken to over the phone (we don’t hear her reveal) in the finale. That finale is the 44 puny “And So We Inaugurate”,gripping Theo’s collage graduation and Olivia departing to join Dennise and Martin in Singapore (as well as finding out she’s becomming a mountainous sister) . So this is a exquisite agreeable season but the wacky humor and individually tremendous episodes are sacrificed in favor to tieing up the loose ends for the shows enevitable conclusion. It was kind of a gloomy day when the Huxtables left the airwaves in 1992;I personally fill prime time family comedy unprejudiced hasn’t been the same since then.

The Cosby Expose began its eighth and final season on September 19,1991. The opening and closing montages intended for the season 7 hurry are finally musty this season. Again, the cast is challenging in rhythm to hip-hop featuring a trumpet and a snare drum. The reason for the delay of this opening’s use:a mural seen in the background was not an novel created by a group of artists. Bill Cosby finally received permission from the artists to employ the facsimile(the group,in fact threatened NBC with a lawsuit if this was done without permission) . This montage contained appearances by Lisa Bonet and Joseph C. Phillips which were deleted due to Bonet’s termination and Phillips’ write-out as a regular after season 7. So we peruse Erika Alexander in face and name this season(due to the recycling of the season 6 opener last season, only she appeared in name) . So the regular cast went from eleven members(in 1990-91) to nine(this season) . Gordon Cartrelle served as executive producer this season, succeeding Steve Kline(in 1990-91) . Cartrelle was even a fashion designer and mentioned in the season 1 episode A SHIRT Sage. Now for the highlights:in the premiere episode,Vanessa(Tempest Bledsoe) announces her engagement to her college Lincoln University custodian Dabnis Brickney(William Thomas, recurringly) . Cliff(Bill Cosby) and Clair(Phylicia Rashad) were not very blissful by the news, probably due to the fact that Vanessa was only 18 years venerable. It was written that Bonet’s and Phillips’ characters,Denise Huxtable Kendall and her lieutenant husband Martin had moved to Africa since Martin had been assigned to a naval dismal there. Martin’s daughter Olivia(Raven Symone) was not allowed to join him and her stepmother,so she remained in Brooklyn with Cliff,Clair,Rudy(Keshia Knight Pulliam) and Clair’s cousin Pam Tucker(Alexander) . Martin(recurringly) visited 10 Stigwood Drive to scrutinize Olivia and everyone else when he was in the vicinity. Martin was in town when African singer Miriam Makeba(as herself in a guest appearance) visited the Huxtable household. He happened to observe her create live in Africa! This legendary series ends with Theo’s(Malcolm Jamal Warner) graduation from Novel York University. In this syndicated two-part episode which premiered April 30,1992,Theo had a bunch of tickets to give for the ceremony. The graduates receive their diplomas by fragment instead of individually like middle and high school. Cliff had flashbacks of what he went through with Theo in the series premiere episode, which we peruse(assist then,Theo had no blueprint of attending college) . Also,Denise, unseen, announces on the phone to the Huxtable household that she and Martin are expectant parents, which means a half-sibling for Olivia. After the ceremony,Theo attends a party at the home of a fellow graduate. Cliff finally had repaired the Huxtables’ ill-functioning doorbell, with a different melody now. He and Clair section one last romantic moment and “crash the fourth wall”. That means Cosby and Rashad broke character after their dance and walked by the studio audience with long, loud applause. The Cosby Exhibit spot another all-new improper, finishing at #18. Although the rating wasn’t too abominable,Cosby decided he had enough of the sitcom and personally pulled the gallop. NBC aired TCS for the very last time on September 17,1992 and on the following Thursday,he hosted the short-lived return of the game reveal,YOU BET YOUR LIFE on NBC. TCS’s sitcom A DIFFERENT WORLD ran for one more season(in 1992-93) and Cheers got the Nielsen axe as well. The A Examine Relieve special, which NBC premiered in May 2002,would have been appropriate for this place, but instead it came with the season 1 episodes. Cosby and Rashad became a TV couple again in 1996 for the four-season bustle of CBS’s Cosby(this should be available on DVD) . Rashad even continued working in the Fresh York theatre, frequently. Also,post-TCS,Tempest Bledsoe had a short urge of her fill morning talk indicate,THE TEMPEST BLEDSOE Display. Malcolm Jamal Warner, continued acting, later starring on WB’s MALCOLM & EDDIE,even guest-starring on various shows such as THE Novel PRINCE OF BEL AIR,another NBC property. MJW,is also a musician,in the studio and on the stage. KKP attended Spellman College in Atlanta. In fact,TCS season 3 finale HILLMAN was filmed at Spellman, marking her first visit. Bonet, changed her stage name and spends time with her daughter Zoe,whose father is rocker Lenny Kravitz, from whom Bonet is divorced from. Sabrina LeBeauf focused on interior decorating and did guest-star on one episode of COSBY(as did KKP) . Geoffrey Owens works primarily as a theater director. RS is now a substantial Disney star, the star of THAT’S SO RAVEN. She’s a recording artist herself, releasing THIS IS MY TIME in 2004,for one. Long live the Huxtables! And Brooklyn!

remarkable5
This is certainly the most remarkable collection of films to come out in one DVD package. And I would really like to thank Criterion for overpricing their DVDs so much that I had very little overlap with my existing library, having passed on most of their editions of these films. Here are a few observations that might be of use to potential buyers:
1) the widescreen movies are anamorphic
2) Haxen is 104 min, substantially longer than the 77 min version that has shown on premium cable.
3) I compared the Janus versions of two films, Wages of Fear and Seven Samurai, with the Criterion versions I had. I expected them to be identical (figuring that Criterion probably did the work for Janus) but they were considerably different. In both cases, the Janus copies were amazingly superior: much better (and louder)sound, crisper images with fewer defects, much better definition in shadowy areas, and a much more stable image. I never realized how poor the Criterion prints were until I saw the comparison. It’s amazing the psychological effect of all that. In both cases, I was strongly tempted to continue watching the whole film with Janus, and found the Criterion copy ‘tiring’. The translations also differed, with Janus having fewer errors (e.g. Samurai’s “the rice we’re eating now” v.s. “the rice we’re eating, how”). I cannot wait to watch the rest of these films.
3. I could detect no difference between Anchor Bay’s and Janus’s Kind Hearts and Coronets.
4. The print of Lady Vanishes is the clearest I’ve seen. The el cheapo Brentwood print, in their Hitchcock collection, is unwatchable.
5. The one really bad aspect of the collection is that the DVDs are wedged tightly into paper slots. Every single disc was covered with tiny flecks of paper, and every disc was scratched, sometimes quite badly (but not enough to affect playback, I think). Whether this occurred putting the disc in, or taking it out, I can’t say. However, repeating this process would rapidly damage the surface. I put all the discs into individual cases, and I STRONGLY recommend doing so. Some of the discs felt like they were glued to the page, the packaging was so tight. If you are a real fanatic about surface defects, and don’t plan on reselling the set, you might even want to use a razor to cut the paper and LIFT the disc out. Whatever you do, don’t rotate the disc as you try to unstick it or you may get a spiralling defect.
Despite that caveat, this is an incredible bargain - less than $12 per film instead of $30 for Criterion’s. That makes those commentaries pretty bloody expensive.
One can only hope Janus will put out another 50 movies (hopefully in individual cases, though).

This is put out by Criterion5
Re: The previous reviewer’s points: The product info is somewhat vague on this, but this set is put out by Criterion. As the comment on that review says, any differences vs. earlier Criterion releases are attributable to upgrades made in later editions. Seven Samurai and M have been upgraded since their original Criterion release, and there may be other cases among the films collected here. On another point, it’s true that individual Criterion releases are expensive, but they usually include many extras of interest to cinephiles. If price is your main consideration, this package is a great way to get Criterion quality at a lower price per disc (although without the extras). I will be ordering one at some point, even though I already have about a dozen of the films, just because it looks to be a gorgeous package. FYI, there is a review in the NY Times today (11/7/2006) that provides some historical background on Janus and Criterion.

Special Features and Scratches5
I would like to notify everyone who got scared about this set when they heard the dvds came in outrageoulsy tight slots that either this has been changed, it never was true, or i have an exeptionally awsome set because mine is not that way at all. In my set every page of the DVD book has 4 dvds that are in slots that are not too tight or loose. You do not have to induvidually unwrap the dvds or anything, just open up the book, and pull a dvd out. I have been pulling these discs out and putting back in and have seen absolutely no damage done. Not one of the movies has skipped yet. I have seen no “flecks of paper” and none of my DVDs “felt like they were glued to the page” like -a movie fan’s-. I strongly suggest everyone with a film appretiation to buy this set, even if you already have a few from the set. It is definatally worth it. And about the special features, I would like to inform anyone turned off by the fact that there are none that there is a 200 page book that comes with the set. That book has rare posters, photographs, the history of revolutionary JANUS and a page description of every film - the context of time and place the film came out, a little about the director and actors, the impact the film had, the meaning behind the film, etc. If that is not enough for you, then…sorry. I personally dont mind, considering the internet exists for any other information about the film I want to know.

960 vs. 970 vs. 7805
My old tiny Casio Exilim 5 MP camera died- I loved that thing because it was so tiny and I took many more pictures because it fit in my pocket- and I had to get something for my trip to France. First bought the 970 thinking, ooh, 5x optical zoom. For someone used to ultracompact, that thing was huge and I didn’t notice much difference between the 5x and the 4x or 3x zoom. I returned it and got the 960, which I stuck with. It is much smaller than the 970 though bigger than my old camera (won’t fit in pants pocket too comfortably), but the wide-angle zoom makes a huge difference to the photos. I travelled with someone who had the 780, and we frequently traded the same shot with both cameras, and the picture quality was much better with the 960, though it is larger than the 780. The controls were easy to navigate, the viewscreen very wide/ large on the 960. The video quality is amazing. Aside from the size, the only downside was that it is a little slow to take repeat shots in action situations. However, the motion control is excellent and you can take shots while jogging without blurring. Sadly, I lost my new 960 at the airport (thankfully, I had downloaded the photos). I decided to replace it with the 780 because I’m not a photographer, thought having the very small camera would make up for the difference in picture quality. After 250 photos on the 960, and 2 days with the 780, I miss the wide-angle zoom and am considering getting another 960. It’s not that much bigger than the 780, and the picture quality difference is significant.

Great Still Images, Excellent 720P for the price5
The true market for this camera is someone who wants to have one device that is compact, shoots excellent quality pictures, and has the capability of capturing 720P HD movies.

It’s a Canon, so the image quality is a given. Tons of examples on Flickr if you simply search for “canon SD960″ or “IXUS 110″. Colors are true, not highly sharpened, low chromatic aberration, and rich with detail. Do not, however, mistake this power of the DIGIC IV processor to be perfect and free of noise at high zoom or ISO above 400. Compared to its class, however, the results are just great for the price point.

But the odds are you are looking at this camera not just for its stills ability, but the fact that it can also shoot HD movies.

So how does the HD perform. Here, the optical stabilization and optical zoom make this a far better choice than it’s nearest hybrid competitor, the Flip HD. The Flip is a fun, very easy to use device, but the lack of image stabilization in camera makes the output very choppy and prone to a “jello” wobbling effect. The Canon has a much smoother output. A strong performer in low light (but expect more noise) and a really excellent result in natural light. For samples, my best recommendation is to search Vimeo — they have the best HD streaming of uploaded videos, and looking at results on Youtube (even if “HD”) doesn’t do the camera justice.

In practice, Mac users will be happy to see that iPhoto can handle the whole offload process — stills and movies. Launch iPhoto, turn on camera and load what you’d like. The movie files are H.264, and can be quickly edited in iMovie or Final Cut.

One worthy note on shooting movie and zoom. You frame your shot and set focus with a half push of the shutter button. Press all the way to record. Once you start recording, you are set at your original zoom level and can not use the OPTICAL zoom to pull closer. Instead, the camera uses DIGITAL zoom to get closer. In practice, I found this did not produce a terribly degraded result, but it is worthy noting before you purchase the camera.

Mono mic on the camera, which pics up sound very well — even on the crowded/noisy streets of NYC.

The cheaper Canon SD780 is very nice also if you are looking to save $50. The newer jog wheel and extra zoom, however, was worth the upgrade (IMHO).

Budget for one of the 8G or 16G SDHC cards sold on Amazon for 50+ minutes of HD recording. And probably worth buying a 3rd party second battery to have on hand.

As advertised, a good point and shoot3
Got this camera a month ago just before the Coachella festival, where I shot ~4GB worth of jpgs and ~2GB of video. I used max resolution for both and did not use the fully automatic modes and other gimmicks. Being an all day festival in the desert, I had plenty of opportunity to test the camera under harsh light, shadow, twilight and artificial lighting at night.

Video wise no complains; this is not a video camera and whatever you get out of it is a plus IMHO. I got usable footage of bands at night, with reasonable sound quality, and I suspect the image stabilization improved the shots, since I don’t have very steady hands.

Still photography is another matter. I got plenty of purple fringes under sunlight and way too much noise under low light. Going beyond ISO 400 is reckless, and the lens stops down too much as you start zooming, making matters worse. 12MP is a marketing gimmick; you’ll seldom get good enough quality shots that you can enlarge where such resolution would be needed; half the pixel density and much lower noise would yield plenty more enlargement worthy pics.

Controls are limited, you can tweak exposure compensation and sensitivity and that’s about it. The flash is best for harsh sunlight situations. Having said that, this is a very compact point and shoot, with a very nice LCD and good focusing; a good camera for snap shots and 4×6 prints.

In this film, Werner Herzog uses the sincere life enigmatic character of Kasper Hauser to ask such questions as, “Who are we? “, “How do we learn? ” and “What is it to be human? ” Questions of such singular importance that neither science, logic or religious dogma can offer adequate answers. Titanic truths are felt rather than analyzed and by fleshing out the very humanness of Kasper through the amazing performance of Bruno S., we salvage such a sense of true and nefarious that societal convention seems out of balance and perverse. In the destroy we win the feeling that we can only learn anything from Kasper because he looks at the world without prejudice or preconceived notions of fair and nefarious. The film begins with the following written introduction: “One Sunday in 1828 a dilapidated boy was found in the town of N. He could hardly hasten and spoke but one sentence. Later he told of being locked in a gloomy cellar from birth. He had never seen a human being, a tree, a house before. To this day on one knows where he came from - or who status him free.” Kasper becomes for “civilized” society an experiment in humanity. The only dilemma is that he does not reply in expected ways, therefore, there must be something unsuitable with him - some scientifically explainable flaw! But through pleasing effective images we experience Kaspers humanity; the childlike joy he experiences while feeding a baby bird; tears of confusion pouring down his face after getting stung by a candle flame at the hands of those who know better; the tenderness he exhibits with an infant child. As Kasper is introduced to “high” society, essentially as a freakish novelty that can be molded into conformity through “education”, it is not he who is the proper freak prove, but those who seem to be ashamed of their believe attachment to nature. Suddenly Kasper is the only non-freak in the film! Herzog seems to have learned considerable from the tale of Kasper Hauser and has created a pleasing testament to that spirit with this film.

Not only is The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser Werner Herzog’s best film but it is without inquire of one of the 5 greatest films of all time. This movie has some of the most extraordinary and worthy images ever committed to film. One of the opening shot’s is that of a wheat field blowing in the wind while Pachelbel’s Cannon plays and the following words appear on the screen; “Don’t you hear that disagreeable screaming all around you? That screaming men call silence.” This sequence perfectly captures the essence of this film. The beauty of suffering seen through the eyes of a man that is completing untainted and untouched by society. This movie will change your life. This movie has fantastic cinematography, a genius consume of music, extraordinary performances and Werner Herzog’s direction is amazing.

Expensive but Necessary4
Carries a big load during power outages. Lasts 3-5 hours depending on the demands placed on it. I used to be able to keep heat on during power outages since I have gas heat. I replaced the old units that had pilot lights with much more efficient units that have electronic ignition which doesn’t work without electricity. This unit keeps the furnace going long enough to cover most outages but doesn’t replace a generator for lengthy ones.

If you are worried about noise, do not buy this UPS.1
This UPS is actually a great unit if you are not concern the noise level that the unit will put out. I purchased 2 of them and they were supposed to provide power backup for a TV and a computer in the same room. It just did not work. The fans in the UPS’s make too much noise. I returned them the same day. If you are not concerned with the db level or you are using them in a server room environment they will work.

Nice but not enough3
I do airbrush tattoos for parties, fairs etc. I need electricy at fairs to run my airbrush compressor. I thought this would be a good way of haveing power without the noise and fumes of a generator. But, the Eletromate holds 500 watts of power which would only run my little compressor for about an hour and a half. Most fairs I do last 5 or 6 hours, so, even though the B&D Electromate 500 is a nice looking very cool item, it just didn’t do the job for me.

Hypertech 32004 Max Energy Power Programmer Description:

Hypertech Max Energy power programmer for 2007-2009 GM Gas Truck/SUV - 4.8/5.3/6.0L is a performance tuner. Max Energy tuning extracts every bit of energy possible out of every molecule of fuel giving you more miles at part-throttle and more power at wide-open throttle. In order to increase engine efficiency, horsepower and torque, Hypertech’s engineers first optimize the spark and fuel curves point by point over the entire rpm band. With the additional power and optimized transmission functions, drivers use less fuel to accelerate and maintain cruising speeds without the torque converter un-locking and transmission down-shifting to a lower gear. The results are maximum power and fuel mileage. The Max Energy power programmer not only gives you the power you crave but also offers specific features for your make, model and year like power tuning, top-speed limiter, speedometer calibrator, cooling fan ‘on/off’ temperatures, return to stock or change option settings, automatic transmission adjustments, RMP rev limiter, internet updateable and read and clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s).
